'Batman v Superman' May Get A Bigger And Darker 70 mm Theatrical Release

There is no denying that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is going to be a big film — so big that Warner Bros. might actually decide to release the film in 70 mm to allow fans to experience all the grit and glory in the best format possible.

Fans can thank Quentin Tarantino for reminding us just for great a movie looks in 70 mm. The director went to great lengths to make sure that 70 mm projectors were up and running in theaters in 100 cities across the U.S. for the release of his latest film, the Western titled The Hateful Eight.

Now that the projectors are already set up — thanks to an 18-month project that took the Weinstein Company $8 to $10 million to restore — other movie studios might now want to get in on the old school format action.

In fact, rumors began to swirl that Warner Bros. was reaching out to theaters to have them screen Batman v Superman in 70 mm. It seems like there actually is some truth behind these rumors.

A member of the message board on Film-Tech.com revealed on the forum that Warner Bros. has been doing its homework to see which theaters have 70 mm projectors.

"Warners called this week to re confirm that we have 70 capability so we will see what happens," David J. Hilsgen said.

While this may mean that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice might be getting a gritty theatrical release, it's important to note the differences between the superhero flick and Tarantino's The Hateful Eight.

The Hateful Eight was shot on film in order to get that 70 mm look Tarantino was after. Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman is believed to have been shot in part on 65 mm IMAX format. Movie buffs may already know that a 70 mm projector would then be the best way to see the film.

However, if the film was also shot digitally, it would then have to be transferred to film in order to be screened in 70 mm. Since the special effects are also done digitally, this might not look as good in the old school format.

Even still, 70 mm format is known for providing that classic movie experience. The format has larger and wider-sized frames compared with 35 mm film, where details are more clearly defined and colors are more pronounced. This means Batman v Superman in this format may be bigger, badder and darker.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will hit theaters on March 25, 2016.
