A special television event over at The CW has offered a closer look at the upcoming film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The featurette took a look at the who, where, and why of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, with little tidbits previously glossed over rather quickly in trailers.
Hosts Kevin Smith and Geoff Johns certainly focus on Batman v Superman, but there’s a big emphasis on the Justice League in general as well. As Johns notes, Batman v Superman is actually the first version of this Batman (played by Ben Affleck) to show up in the current film lineage. But the events of Man of Steel affected Affleck’s Bruce Wayne, and it’s those ramifications that are important.
“At the end of Man of Steel, Zod was fighting Superman,” Affleck says over clips from the Batman v Superman trailer. “There was lasers ripping apart buildings and things were blowing up. Bruce Wayne blames Superman.”
Johns goes into a bit more detail as to why Batman and Superman are fighting. First of all, there’s the previously mentioned lasers and blowing up, of which Batman is not a fan; and for his part, Superman considers Batman to be a dangerous vigilante. In short, both think that the other is a threat to the safety of humanity, and it’s not like they’re entirely wrong.
There’s also a bit about Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor and how he fits into all of this. He’s described as a take on the original Lex, red hair and all, but a new kind of adversary for the two heroes in the film. “Lex feels competitive with Bruce Wayne,” Eisenberg says. “He’s learned everything about him. Lex hates Superman, learned everything about him.”
The full special is available now on the CW’s website. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled to release on March 25.
