Bungie Reportedly Planning Ammo Pack Microtransactions For 'Destiny' Online Shooter

Bungie is reportedly planning to sell ammo packs for real money in its popular game Destiny, which would be terrible news for some gamers.

Microtransactions are nothing new for the gaming world, but if Bungie does indeed start selling ammo packs, it would take things to a whole new level.

The information comes from VG247, which broke the news on Monday, Jan. 25.

"Bungie is to sell Destiny ammo packs for real money, a source familiar with the matter has confirmed to VG247. It's as yet unknown when the feature will be added to the online shooter," reports the publication.

Destiny already has microtransactions since October 2015, allowing players to buy more in-game currency called Silver. Players can spend Silver on Sparrow items or emotes, but that's about it. If Bungie will actually sell ammo packs, however, it would be the first time microtransactions cover items that directly affect one's gameplay.

Those with deeper pockets, for instance, could buy ammo in a snap and rule co-op Raids, to the detriment of those who don't want to pay for ammo. It's not hard to imagine that many gamers will have a negative reaction to this change, as many already prefer to stay away from games that involve microtransactions.

The ammo packs come in three options for each of the three weapon slots in the game, but it remains unclear for now just how much the ammo packs would cost in real-world money.

For now, Destiny players get ammo when fallen enemies drop it, or buy it with glimmer. Ammo packs microtransactions could bring great changes to the game experience and more money for Bungie and Activision.

It remains to be seen how it will all pan out, especially since in-game microtransactions continue to stir controversy. Sure, they can be a gold mine for developers, but they can also cause some serious headaches for consumers.

Just lately, for instance, one parent was baffled to see a nearly $8,000 bill for FIFA microtransactions on Xbox. The massive bill covered one month of Xbox Live charges his teenage son made while playing FIFA.

Not all cases involving microtransactions are so extreme, but Bungie may see some strong reactions if it rolls out ammo pack microtransactions.
