Dead Island 2 premiered at E3 earlier this year with a stunning and hilarious computer generated trailer, but while it did give gamers a few clues as to where players will be traveling to next in the series, no actual gameplay was shown. Developer Yager and publisher Deep Silver is now remedying that with a brand new gameplay trailer for the game, just in time for Europe's biggest gaming convention, Gamescom.
Set in sunny Hollywood, California in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, Dead Island 2 looks to be every bit as bloody as its predecessor, judging from the gameplay trailer below. In it, zombie heads are smashed, whacked, stomped and sliced off with a variety of melee weaponry.
The original Dead Island placed a heavy emphasis on upgradable and customizable melee weapons to fight back the zombie hordes, as guns were seemingly a rarity in the game's island resort location. If this trailer is an accurate depiction of what will be in the game, it looks like firearms may be much more common on the west coast, and can also be brought to the workbench for even more customizable carnage. Duel-wielding weapons are also included, with players having the ability to slice with a machete in one hand and fire a gun in the other.
Don't worry, though; the bulk of the gameplay shown is dedicated to slicing and dicing zombies in every way imaginable. It looks like players will be able to target individual areas on the zombies and slice of limbs accordingly. Keep in mind that according to the trailer this is pre-Alpha footage, and will likely improve and change in the coming months. The original Dead Island also featured a number of different characters to choose from, a feature returning in the sequel as four playable classes: hunter, beserker, speeder and bishop, each with a different type of new "fury attack."
If Dead Island 2 news isn't enough to get you excited, the in-stasis Dead Island film recently got revived thanks to a partnership with Occupant Entertainment, who is taking over after Lionsgate failed to develop a film based on the popular game property. The film is now being fast-tracked for a release in 2015 and is searching for a director to bring to life a zombie film inspired by the award-winning announcement trailers for the first and second game.
Dead Island 2 currently doesn't have a specific release date, but it should be coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC sometime in spring 2015.
