Layers of Fear is regarded by many as one of the next big hits of this genre, and Sony let everyone know that the horror title lands on PS4s no later than Feb. 16.
This news arrives thanks to a post on Sony's PlayStation blog signed by Rafal Basej, who is a part of the developing team that brought Layers of Fear to life. The game came to be thanks to the efforts of gaming firm Bloober. The player has to assume the role of a mentally anguished artist, struggling to cope.
"A tragic past. An unfinished painting. And a crumbling psyche. These are the core elements that make up the setting of Layers of Fear, a new psychological horror game," Basej notes.
Following the established recipe for success of recent horror games, Layers of Fear takes the player through a first-person adventure where he must solve puzzles and face visual tricks.
For instance, you might enter a room filled with locked doors, only to discover when you rotate the camera that the doors are gone. Were they even there in the first place? The developers boast that they offer a "psychedelic" experience, one that aptly challenges players' expectations from this type of game.
Speaking of psychedelic horrific experiences, Euclidean was another horror game that made waves with its geometric descent into the abyss, madness and futility of existence.
In Basej's opinion, the backbone of a horror game has much more to do with the haunting beauty and introspective questions that it leaves the player with, and less with gore and jump scares.
"We have left tons of personal items, notes, photos, and wall scribbles that expand the plot and immerse you in the story, while also leaving much to the player's imagination," Basej tantalizes future players.
Some experts in the matter compared Layers of Fear with Silent Hill when it comes to the atmosphere, while others drew parallels between the upcoming horror and BioShock because of the ample, immersive storytelling.
Somewhat intriguing, the game never saw hype over a PS4 launch, as it was marketed only to Xbox and PC gamers. Thanks to the Steam Early Access and Xbox Preview Program, Layers of Fear seemed to come to the two platforms way before entering Sony's ecosystem.
What we know for certain is that Layers of Fear will come next month to PlayStation 4, and we look forward to the PC and Xbox One releases, as well.
Until next month, enjoy the announcement trailer of the game, below.
