If you grew up in the mid-'80s, chances are "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" was a part of your childhood. Perhaps you'll be pleased to know that there's going to be a documentary about the toyline which spawned an animated series, a spin-off (remember She-Ra?) and other merchandise.
However, the documentary is not quite here yet. In fact, a Kickstarter project for it was just launched Jan. 20, unveiling the effort to bring together "Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe."
"Our team includes award-winning industry veterans known for their prowess in digging into beloved pop culture properties in documentaries that have been well-reviewed by fans and critics," Definitive Films wrote on the project's Kickstarter page.
Some of the initial participants on-board with the project include: Tom Kalinske, former Mattel president; Mark Taylor, toy designer; Gary Frank, MOTU tour manager; Chris Weber, cartoon and newspaper strip writer; Robert Lamb, Filmation storyboard writer and artist; Jack Olesker, "New Adventures of He-Man" head writer and co-creator; Cam Clarke; He-Man/Prince Adam voice actor; Brian Dobson, Skeletor voice actor; Jason Moore, He-Man.org founder; and James Eatock, MOTU historian.
Definitive Films' goal is to come up with a documentary about 90 to 100 minutes long, to be released in December 2017. Some of the rewards will offer bonus content in the form of either a director's commentary track or any material to come out of making "Power of Grayskull," like the web series "Chasing Grayskull."
As of this writing, $15,024 have already been pledged out of the project's $25,000 goal. With 36 days left in the Kickstarter campaign, that much pledged could not only mean the project will meet its goal but it could also exceed it.
Pre-ordering the resulting documentary secures exclusive "Power of Grayskull" rewards.
Whether the documentary or the official "He-Man" movie gets released first is anyone's guess at this point. The movie's script, however, is supposedly coming along, according to DeVon Franklin, Columbia Pictures' senior vice president of production. Then again, he tweeted about this back in Nov. 2014.
"Power of Grayskull" will, of course, feature content different from the movie so if you're more than excited at the prospect of a "He-Man" documentary, show your support for Definitive Films right away.
