Ever find yourself in Starbucks, sipping on a cup of coffee and grooving to the music that's playing overhead ... only to not know the artist you're listening to?
Well, as part of its multi-year partnership with Spotify, Starbucks is now allowing its mobile app customers to immediately discover music playing in its stores and save those songs to a playlist on the music-streaming service. That way, they can listen to Starbucks-curated songs anywhere.
As of Tuesday, this new digital music experience will reach customers in upwards of 7,500 Starbucks stores throughout the United States in addition to 10 million My Starbucks Rewards loyalty members and U.S. Spotify users.
"Music has played a pivotal role in our stores for over 40 years and we have been at the forefront of how to integrate it into a retail environment," Starbucks chairman and CEO Howard Schultz said in the company's press release statement Tuesday, as part of the announcement. "Today is the next era in that experience. We are merging the physical and digital, providing new access points for Spotify as they continue to grow globally, placing more control into our customers' hands and giving artists the world's largest stage for them to share their talent."
The music discovery update to Starbucks' mobile app will be available to both iPhone and Android users. In addition to the discovery feature and saving songs to Spotify playlists, the app's users will also be able to view recently played songs.
