Star Trek Beyond is coming this summer, and so far, the third film in the Star Trek reboot is keeping its cards close to its chest. The first trailer for the film, released back in December, rubbed some longtime fans (and even cast members) the wrong way, so more news about the future of the franchise has been in hot demand.
Look no further than a new video from Entertainment Tonight. The show went to the set of Star Trek Beyond to learn some new details about the film, and it didn't come away empty-handed.
Chris Pine starts the video by revealing the new "weapons bay" area on the Enterprise, complete with new phasers. Since the trailer makes it clear the Enterprise won't survive to the end of the film, it remains to be seen if the crew will actually get to put those new weapons to use.
The video then shifts over to John Cho, who reveals that the Enterprise crew will be two years into its five-year mission at the start of the film. That has the crew members feeling homesick and more than a little tired of one another. It's then that Cho reveals a previously-unknown plot point for the film: his character, Hikaru Sulu, has a daughter.
Sulu has a daughter in the original Star Trek timeline as well, introduced in the 1994 film Star Trek Generations. The mother of his child in the new film is still an unknown at this point, with Cho saying fans will have to wait for the movie to learn the big reveal.
Karl Urban also takes a moment in the video below to discuss the new Star Fleet uniforms. He says they have a "retro" look to them, and the designers have given a nice nod to past Star Trek uniforms to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original series. You can see Urban in his uniform below.
Star Trek Beyond is in theaters July 22.
