Fan Recreates Original 'Pokémon' Region Using Unreal Engine 4

There are two kinds of Pokémon fans: this guy that recreated the original game’s Kanto region using Unreal Engine 4, and everyone else.

Preston Dunagan, by his own admission, spent the past seven months crafting the original Pokémon region in Unreal Engine 4 with help from Maya and Photoshop. He’s posted a video that takes a flying look at his handiwork, which includes all outside regions — which doesn’t include the Safari Zone or Viridian Forest.

“I did not use any marketplace assets,” the description on Dunagan’s video states, “making all models and materials myself.”

It’s worth noting that, according to Dunagan, the map’s actually based on the version of Kanto seen in HeartGold and SoulSilver, which changed ever so slightly in the years between the original 1996 Kanto region and HG/SS’s 2009 release. There’s yet to have been a game with the Kanto region in this kind of 3D detail, but the latest games — Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby — showcase a 3D version of the Hoenn region.

It’s unclear whether Dunagan began the project with celebrating the franchise’s 20th anniversary in mind, but his little overview does mention the milestone.

The Pokémon Company International is set to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original Japanese release of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green starting in February with a variety of events, activities, releases, and distributions. It happens to be a good year to be a Pokémon fan, or for starting to be one.
