Fox Mulder never gave up searching for the truth, even after the closure of the X-Files department of the FBI in 2002.
A new trailer for Fox's revival of The X-Files shows an obsessed Mulder still hunting down clues and trying to uncover the facts of what's going on in the world.
"All these years, we've been deceived," says Mulder in the clip. "A decade of my life, I've been led by my nose through a dead end. They police us. They spy on us. They tell us that makes us safer. We've never been in more danger."
The clip ends with Mulder approaching Dana Scully, his former partner in the FBI's X-Files division: He asks her, "Are you ready for this?"
Scully's answer is that she doesn't believe that she has a choice in the matter.
The X-Files television series began life on Fox in 1993 and ran until 2002 for nine seasons, making it one of the longest-running consecutive science fiction shows in history. Each episode tackled subjects such as government conspiracy, aliens, the supernatural and weird science. Agents Mulder and Scully headed up an FBI division to uncover the truth about these things, some of which often surprised the skeptical Scully.
Last year, Fox announced that the series would return for a limited run in 2016, with the premiere of the new season now just around the corner.
"I hadn't quite imagined that we would have a second run," said series creator Chris Carter to Rolling Stone. "It's amazing to me. There's a little bit of 'been there, done that,' but it's got a whole new context, both politically and scientifically."
The new series doesn't pick up where the original left off: a lot of time has passed since Mulder and Scully last worked together. And although the two had a romance, that relationship no longer exists by the time events in the new show begin.
In spite of that, expect familiar faces from the original series to show up as both Skinner and Cigarette Smoking Man have parts to play in The X-Files revival.
The X-Files returns Jan. 24 to Fox.
