Aquaman, the king of Atlantis, may have found his queen.
The Hollywood Reporter reports Amber Heard (Magic Mike XXL, The Danish Girl) is currently in negotiations to play Mera, Aquaman's wife and the Queen of Atlantis, in DC's cinematic universe. That means she would first appear in Zack Snyder's Justice League Part 1 in 2017 before appearing in the stand-alone Aquaman film the following year. Aquaman will be directed by James Wan.
She would be most often working alongside actor Jason Momoa, who will be portraying Aquaman in DC's film universe and whom we've already seen in promotional material. He is set to make his debut in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice in March.
Mera's powers are similar to that of her husband, with the ability to breathe underwater and increased strength from living on the ocean floor. However, her comic origin has her hailing from Xebel, a banished Atlantean colony. As a Xebelian she has unique powers that Atlanteans don't share, such as the ability to manipulate water. She can even solidify it to create weapons and armor. Mera is defined by her red hair and fiery temper, with the character at one point becoming a Red Lantern.
In DC's New 52 comics, Mera was sent by the Xebelian's to kill Aquaman, but she gave up on her mission and instead fell in love with him, eventually becoming queen. How Mera will be portrayed in Justice League Part 1 is still unknown. Will she and Aquaman be enemies at first? Or will they already be king and queen when we first meet them?
We don't yet know, but Mera's casting will just be the first of what is sure to be a long line of DC Comic characters appearing on the big screen. With numerous solo films for each of the Justice League heroes, dozens of lesser-known heroes and villains will get their chance in the spotlight.
