It looks like Ryan Coogler is now one of the de facto must-have up-and-comers of Hollywood: the director of the gut-wrenching indie film Fruitvale Station and the Rocky sequel-adjacent Creed has been announced as the director of Marvel's Black Panther movie.
"We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family," said Black Panther producer Kevin Feige in a statement released by Marvel on Monday, Jan. 11.
"The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct Black Panther," Feige added. "Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we've found the perfect director to bring T'Challa's story to life."
Much has been kept under wraps about Black Panther since it was announced back in 2015, along with a slew of other MCU movies. While fans of the superhero know he will be introduced at the end of the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, and that Chad Boseman will play the titular hero, very few other details have been leaked.
Nevertheless, Coogler as director looks like a promising choice, especially due to the critical and commercial success of his first two flicks.
Black Panther will land in theaters on Feb. 16, 2018.
