Get ready for a lot more of the Twitter-ready presidential pup Bo Obama on your Snapchat screen: the White House has officially hopped on the bandwagon and joined the social media messaging app in an effort to engage a younger generation of current and future voters, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the preparations for POTUS' last-ever State of the Union address as the event goes underway.
The outreach solution is on-point for the mission of communication outreach for that particular demographic: over 60 percent of the population between the ages of 13 and 34 use Snapchat on a regular basis, and the messenger app rounds up about 100 million users daily. However, the goal is also twofold: via the service, the Obama Administration wants to give users a behind-the-scenes look at preparations for the State of the Union address.
"In light of the number of Americans who use the service to consume news and share with their friends, the White House is joining Snapchat to engage this broad cross-section of the population in new and creative ways," said Josh Miller, the White House's director of product management, in an official statement released by the administration on Jan 11. "[O]ur Official Story will take you behind the scenes of the White House's State of the Union preparations, with footage and angles you won't find anywhere else."
Users can follow the account by either adding "WhiteHouse" as a friend or by scanning a snapcode provided on the White House site.
The State of the Union address will air on Jan. 12, 9 p.m. EST, and will also be available for streaming via Amazon Prime.
