Universal Studios has announced that the trailer for the film adaptation of the erotic drama "Fifty Shades of Grey" garnered over 100 million views, gaining the record for launch trailers with the most views in its first week.
Those views come from a combination of official video and unofficial copies on YouTube, videos on Apple's trailer page, posts to IMDB, posts on Yahoo's movie site and on official Facebook pages.
"Fifty Shades of Grey" is an adaptation of the erotic novel by E. L. James. It was released in 2011, followed by "Fifty Shades Darker" and "Fifty Shades Freed" to complete the trilogy. The three books together have garnered more than 100 million copies sold worldwide.
The bestseller is about a young woman who gets caught in the sexual web of a wealthy entrepreneur. The film stars Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele and Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey. It is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, whose first film was her 2009 movie about John Lennon's childhood called "Nowhere Boy."
The trailer debuted on July 24, after a marketing campaign that included Beyonce sharing a teaser of the trailer on her Instagram feed and being teased on NBC's "Today Show." Fans of the book and curious filmgoers flocked to the web to see the final two-and-a half-minute trailer.
"Fifty Shades of Grey" comes to theaters February 13, 2015.
