Netflix's new interface makes it much easier to browse through titles that are available on the platform. While subscribers can see new releases and what's trending, Netflix also provides personalized subgenre suggestions based on the viewer's history so that titles related to their interests pop up directly on their home page.
Of course, Netflix subscribers can also go to the "Browse" tab to select the exact genre they are looking for. But many users may not know that the Internet-based streaming service also has hidden genres that can be unlocked using secret codes.
The web address hack allows Netflix subscribers to switch a number in the URL to help them narrow their viewing choices.
Netflix URL's looks something like www.netflix.com/browse/genre/XXXXX. If the viewer plays around with this end number, they can uncover some hidden genres. These include Mind-Bending Cult Horror Movies from the 1980s, Dark Suspenseful Gangster Dramas, and Movies Starring Matthew McConaughey.
Not all numbers will bring up a subgenre by category code, but a list has been posted to give subscribers a starting point. And as the catalog changes, some codes leave and others join, so there are changes.
Type in 2851 to get Visually-Striking Movies for ages 5 to 7, or 12123 to get Period Pieces. If you want a Western directed by Andrew V. McLaglen, type in 4578. And some listings are pretty narrow — there is just one title in the Mattthew McConaughey subgenre (354).
Other noteworthy subgenres include: Satanic Stores (6998), Tearjerkers (6384), Urban & Dance Concerts (9472), and Gangster Movies (31851).
It takes some time to play around with the numbers if you don't use the posted list (an open-sourced spreadsheet of codes was posted, but is currently unavailable), but the exercise serves as a fun way to find new titles to prevent yourself from getting bored watching House of Cards episodes again when you feel like you've already streamed all the interesting titles currently available.
New titles are added to the platform each month. Netflix showcased two new upcoming original series The Crown and The Get Down at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Jan. 6. The company also announced its service is now available in 130 countries with its launch in India and a handful of other countries.
