HBO In Talks To Renew 'Game of Thrones' For Seasons 7 And 8

HBO finally revealed that season 6 of Game of Thrones will premiere on April 24, but as fans prepare themselves for this upcoming season, they will also be pleased to hear it may not be the last.

The premium cable network is already in talks to make sure the Emmy-award winning series returns for at least two more seasons.

HBO president Michael Lombardo confirmed that the company is currently in renewal discussions with the series creators David Benioff and Dan Wiess for seasons 7 and 8 during the Television Critics Association press tour.

This should come to no surprise because of the popularity of the series, as well as previous comments made by Lombardo.

"David and Dan are feeling there's probably two more years after season 6, that's what we're looking at right now," Lombardo said in July. "We hope that they would change their mind, but that's how they are feeling now."

This follows Game of Throne's renewal trend, since two years ago the series was picked up for seasons 5 and 6.

The contracts of the main cast previously only covered them until season 6 before HBO renegotiated these contracts to include the option for season 7. That also means these main cast members received a big rase for their work on season 5, 6, and the potential season 7.

Actors Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) are said to be part of the tier of main characters that went under contract renegotiations, negotiating in concert.

Still, this does not guarantee these characters won't be killed off at some point.

With two more potential seasons, author George R.R. Martin better hope that he can churn out more books. Martin recently revealed that the next book in the series, The Winds of Winter, will not be finished before the return of the HBO series.

Game of Thrones season 6 premieres on April 24 on HBO.
