With Legends of Tomorrow airing this month, The CW is pulling out all the stops and releasing trailers for its new series that combines DC heroes and villains to save the future by time traveling through the past.
A new trailer shows how this group of misfits comes together, which includes Arrow's Sara Lance (now White Canary) and The Atom, with The Flash's Captain Cold, Heatwave, Hawkman, Hawkgirl and Professor Martin Stein and Jefferson "Jax" Jackson, who join to make Firestorm.
"When heroes alone are not enough ... the world needs legends," states the series description. "Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat - one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself."
Much of the story for Legends of Tomorrow began with this season of Arrow and The Flash, which introduced the characters that viewers will see on the new series, as well as set up the story. Those episodes also introduced the world to Vandal Savage, who will serve as the main villain.
However, don't expect to see much of the Green Arrow or the Flash on Legends of Tomorrow. This new team of superheroes are the outcasts, the ne'er-do-wells and the criminals. But there's a reason for that.
"To me, those are the sort of heroes that really interest me — the underdog versions," said showrunner Phil Klemmer to Comic Book Resources. "Superman's awesome, but he doesn't have problems that I can relate to. I like the f-up heroes, and the sort of crooked heroes, and to combine them and watch them bump up against each other — that's a recipe for TV that's fun to write."
However, viewers can expect to see familiar historical settings during the series as the team travels back and forth in time.
"We want to do the greatest hits of the 20th century," said Klemmer. "Without giving away spoilers, it's like, if you had a time machine, where would you go? Where would you intervene? Trying to imagine Vandal Savage as the devil in 'Sympathy for the Devil' — imagining that this guy's been going through history, dipping his fingers in human events, and steering the course of history for his own evil purposes."
Legends of Tomorrow premieres Jan. 21 on The CW.
