There's a lot of secrecy surrounding the fifth Bourne movie, but Matt Damon recently opened up and revealed some new details about the upcoming film.
One thing already confirmed is that Bourne 5 will take place 12 years after Bourne's disappearance in 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum. That means that the new movie all but ignores the previous 2012 film starring Jeremy Renner as a new character in the franchise, which makes sense as Bourne 5 sees the return of Damon in the role, as well as the return of director Paul Greengrass (Damon refused to make any further movies without him).
However, the world of Bourne 5 is very similar to our own.
"There's been the financial collapse, the great recession, all these issues of cyberwarfare and civil liberties," says Damon to Entertainment Weekly.
Of course, the new film will have Bourne continue his search to find hints about his past, but he begins this film worse for the wear. Damon says that the movie starts with Bourne "in a dark and tortured place."
The Bourne film series gets its inspiration from a series of novels by Robert Ludlum. Those stories follow Bourne, a CIA assassin with amnesia as he searches for clues about his real identity. However, the fourth film featured a new character carrying on Bourne's legacy.
Entertainment Weekly also released the first image from the Bourne movie, showing a broody main character, much in line with how Damon described him.
Filming for Bourne 5 has begun, with next month seeing action on location in Las Vegas. The Be In A Movie website recently put out a casting call for background actors, allowing fans to appear in the movie.
Earlier this month, Damon confirmed that filming for Bourne 5 was about halfway done and hinted that there's a huge action scene coming up in that city.
"We were in Tenerife, which is supposed to be Athens," said Damon to Variety. "It would be like a nighttime riot scene to kind of start the movie. And then England, Berlin a little bit for about a week, and a little bit in D.C. Then we're going to Vegas for the third act.... Big car chase on the strip."
The good news is that this is one film where Damon's character won't need rescuing. This means that we won't have to spend any additional funds on saving a Damon character in a film (so far, the total tally is a fictional $900 billion).
The new untitled Bourne 5 film should premiere in 2016.
