'The Martian' Grabs $55 Million At Box Office, Second Best October Opening After 'Gravity'

The Martian is the biggest movie at the box office at the moment as the film managed to earn over $55 million over the weekend. This makes for the second largest opening in October in history.

The movie hit theaters only days after NASA announced that it had found water on Mars. We also understand that The Martian director Ridley Scott knew of the findings well before NASA made it available to the public in order for him to make the movie scientifically accurate.

The amount of cash made by The Martian is a clear sign that moviegoers are in love with space adventures. The last movies of that genre to make it big at the box office are none other than Interstellar and Gravity.

Interstellar, which was directed by Christopher Nolan, opened in October last year at $47.5 million while Gravity opened at $55.8 million.

The movie is also Scott's second largest opening since his 2001 hit Hannibal. The director needed this to be a well-received film both in terms of ratings and box office returns especially after what became of Prometheus.

Prometheus was not a terrible film by any means, but it was not a great movie either. Most critics agree that Scott could have done better with the film and, with a sequel called Aliens: Paradise Lost in the making, a space adventure is exactly what Scott needs right now.

As for Matt Damon, The Martian is his second best opening since The Bourne Ultimatum back in 2007. For an actor of his stature, that is quite a number of years not to have a movie open at the box office with these figures.

Here is the all-important list of top 10 films at the U.S. box office right now:
