NBC Universal’s released the first official teaser for the upcoming anime adaptation of Kentarou Miura’s Berserk, a manga that also received a television anime adaptation back in 1997. The teaser — debuted at NBC Universal’s Comic Market 89 (also known as Comiket) booth — isn’t clear on the format of the upcoming adaptation, but it does seem like it should be both bloody and violent.
What is known is that the anime, in whatever format it’s eventually revealed to be, should release in 2016. According to Anime News Network, Miura mentioned in the Young Animal magazine that whatever it is will show Guts, Berserk’s main protagonist, in his "Black Swordsman" appearance — one not seen in the 1997 anime, meaning that it might take place beyond where the previous version ended. That’s pure speculation based on the confirmed attire, so take that as you will for now.
In addition to the new anime, the 2012 high-definition remaster of the 1997 Berserk series is scheduled to release on Blu-ray on April 20 in Japan for 18,000 yen, or about $148. The source manga itself is currently on hiatus after going on and off hiatus since 2014. The next chapter is scheduled for somewhere around summer and will be updated irregularly from that point on. It’s unclear when the next compiled volume might release in North America.
