It's Christmas-themed schadenfreude for the ages, but this time swapping coal for wood — at least for one little boy in Massachussets.
According to Boston's Fox 25, 9-year-old Scott Lundy awoke on Christmas morning to open presents, one of which he hoped would be a PlayStation 4. His hopes seemed to be fulfilled when he opened one of his presents, revealing a PS4 box underneath the wrapping paper.
"He got a PS4 and he says 'this is the best present ever, this is the best Christmas ever,' " said Brian Lundy, the boy's father, in an interview with the news station.
But the boy's dreams were soon dashed when, upon opening the box, he found a fake PS4 model inside made of wood — accompanied by an obscene message paired with a drawing of a phallus. Scott wasn't the only one to be horrified: the Lundys had made the purchase in good faith, and were equally appalled at what the boy had unwrapped.
"He's crying and he's upset and he's in the playroom by himself and he just wants to be alone so at that point. I was crushed," said the boy's step-mother, Kristin Lundy, in a Facebook post describing the event.
"This has ruined his belief in Santa," she added.

The family returned the sham PlayStation to a Target in Saugus, Mass., where they had originally purchased the item; the store immediately gave them a $100 gift card and a complimentary copy of The Uncharted Collection, in addition to a replacement console.
As of now, there is no word on how the switch between the promised PS4 and the block of wood took place; according to Fox 25, incidents like these "happen occasionally." If this is the case, perhaps an Elf on the Shelf might be a necessary evil for the store in question.
