When EA first announced the Star Wars Battlefront season pass, many assumed the game would be receiving content related to the latest entry in the saga, The Force Awakens. It seemed a given, especially in light of the free "Battle of Jakku" DLC that takes place after the events of Return of the Jedi on a planet featured in the new film.
Unfortunately, it looks like that isn't going to be the case. In response to a fan question on Twitter, the official EA Star Wars account responded with this:
The phrasing of the response makes it painfully obvious EA is holding back on releasing content for The Force Awakens so that it can instead be used in a future Battlefront title years down the line. That's more than a little disappointing for fans who have already forked over $50 for the game's season pass on the assumption that EA would include content from the new film.
With The Force Awakens out and the account seemingly confirming each of the game's four upcoming expansions will only include content from the original trilogy, what planets might we see? Bespin/Cloud City seems a given, as it is one of the few planets any significant time is spent on, though that location won't work for game types like Walker Assault. Might we see Lando Calrissian as a playable hero? The planet Coruscant is another possibility, as is a level that takes place on the Death Star.
We'll have to wait for an official announcement from EA to get the details, but the news that the planets and characters from the critically-acclaimed new film won't be playable is likely to upset more than a few fans.
