Fitness tracks and other sensors can be very helpful for sportspeople — they can help refine technique and tell users how they can improve. In some sports, however, tracking the user isn't as simple as putting on a Fitbit. Like snowboarding, for example, which requires different sensors than those offered by most fitness trackers.
A new set of snowboard binders is aimed at helping snowboarding catch up with the rest of the sports world when it comes to trackers. The "smart bindings" are by Cerevo, and they're called the Xon Snow-1.
The placement of the bindings opens up the sensors to a world of possibilities. They can track things like balance, which is something that can't be done with other fitness trackers. They can also track weight distribution and board flex, which can be a big help for those who end up favoring a leg or who are testing out a new snowboard.
Like other trackers, the Xon Snow-1 bindings can connect to the iPhone 5s or newer through Bluetooth 4.0, allowing users to see their stats in real-time through the Xon app. The bindings will also keep a log of the user's route.
Users also won't have to pull out their smartphone to see all of their data. LED lights on the heel and toe of the bindings change color based on load, allowing users to see their load smartphone-free.
The bindings themselves will run for around seven hours on a single charge and will take around three hours to charge after the battery has died. They're also IPX4-certified, meaning you don't have to be too worried about snow getting in the USB port. The Snow-1 snowboard bindings cost $580 and are now available from Amazon or from the Cerevo online store.
