Julien Wiltshire has just been dubbed the national winner of the first-ever Super League Minecraft Tournament — and to add a truly delightful twist, the new champ has yet to graduate from elementary school.
Wilthsire, a fifth grader at Seven Arrows Elementary in Pacific Palisades, Calif., received a Super Bolt Trophy, as well as a $5,000 scholarship, accounting for half of his overall team's earnings at the tournament, which was held at the AMC Santa Monica 7 in Santa Monica in June of this year.
Their triumph was no small feet — Wiltshire and his fellow teammates competed with more than 1,000 other participants of all ages nationwide (although, according to Engadget, the gamers were on average between the ages of six and 18), at simulcast events held in roughly 40 respective movie venues.
For those from the Palisades area, it's no surprise that one of their own came back with the Minecraft trophy — Seven Arrows encourages their kids to play Minecraft to develop their STEM skills.
"Many of our kids play Minecraft," said Margarita Pagliai, head of the school, in a press release about her student's win and the popularity of the game. "When they heard about this new after-school league they jumped at the chance to compete."
