'Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3' Gets New Trailer, Release Date

A trailer for Square Enix's Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 was released at the Jump Festa 2016 while Shueisha's February issue of "V Jump" magazine outlined a March 24, 2016 release date for Japan.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 will take place in a cyber world surrounded by advanced science. With the help of a device called a reactor worn over his ears, the protagonist is able to tap into a slew of functions that will help him make his way through the game and befriend more than 500 monsters. Little does he know, however, that someone had rewritten his past, and he has to go on an adventure to get back to his old self.

"V Jump" magazine also confirmed several new monsters that will be showing up in the game, like Grand Caesar and Besking from Dragon Quest: Monster Parade and Witch Greichel and Needleman from Dragon Quest X. In the same issue, the "Scout Attack" skill was introduced as well, which will see the scout rate of an enemy monster increase when used. And as a monster's scout rate grows, the likelihood of an enemy monster being recruited as an ally also increases. Additionally, if the "Accumulate Tension" command is used, a player's attacks will become more powerful while his scout success rate goes up.

There is no news if Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 will be reaching U.S. shores but the possibility exists given the first two games in the series were localized for North America. Then again, these first two games logged dismal numbers in the region so it is also possible that Square Enix may not be too keen on a North American release for the third Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker game.

Joker and Joker 2, however, were for the Nintendo DS. Joker 3 will be the first in the series to come out for the 3DS. Another difference between the previous games and Joker 3 is that the third game will offer the ability to ride monsters on any terrain, which will allow players to move faster than usual or get to destinations not reachable by normal means. Monster riding will also evolve as the player progresses through the story and can be used during a fight to gain an advantage over an enemy monster.

Like all games in the series, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 will feature designs from Akira Toriyama of "Dragon Ball" fame. He is also credited for character designs in several video games, like Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest and Blue Dragon.
