Google Glass gets hardware upgrade, more testers invited

Google is not only gearing up to expand the production of its wearable Google Glass, but reportedly it has also upgraded the hardware and has invited more testers.

Moreover, Explorers who purchased the device prior to the upgraded hardware will not be at a disadvantage, as Google has announced a trade-in or swap out, which is expected to begin in November.

"Later this year, all Explorers will have a one-time option to swap out their existing Glass for a new one. This hardware update will allow your Glass to work with future lines of shades and prescription frames, and we'll also include a mono earbud," per the official Google Glass Google+ account.

The one-time swap out is optional and Explorers who bought their Google Glass prior to October 28 are eligible.

"We'll be offering a one-time optional swap out for Explorers who purchased their device before October 28, 2013," per Google FAQs.

Explorers will have 60 days to register for the exchange once the swap out is open. Moreover, Explorers also have the option of changing the color of their Google Glass at the time if they so wish.

Moreover, Google Glass owners will also have the option to invite three friends who can join them in the program. This will help the company market the wearable tech and expand its reach

"Over the next few weeks, all Explorers will have the opportunity to invite three friends to join the program. They'll be able to buy Glass online and can have it shipped to their home, office, treehouse or igloo. We're counting on you to get Glass to the people you think will make great Explorers. More Explorers means more feedback, and more feedback means better Glass," notes Google.

However, the Google Glass beta program is still limited to the U.S. and, therefore, Explorers will be limited to inviting their friends in the country.

But with reports suggesting that Google is looking to expand production of Google Glass, and increasing volumes, the wearable device could perhaps soon make its way to other countries.

"According to sources familiar with Google's plans, it is planning a "substantial" increase of Glass's manufacturing volumes in the run-up to Christmas. Until now, little more than 10,000 of the Glass "Explorer Edition" products have been distributed to competition winners, developers and other early adopters," per CNBC.

Google is expected to put the Google Glass up for sale to general public in 2014. Explorers are not required to sign-up for the program to invite friends as Google will "proactively notify Explorers in November with next steps for the swap program."
