As actor-turned-former-Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger has said time and time again, "he'll be back" — in theaters, that is. In celebration of the film's 25th anniversary, Terminator 2: Judgment Day will return to theaters, this time in 3D, sometime in 2016.
The sequel to the first Terminator movie was released in 1991 and was directed by James Cameron, the man responsible for a diverse bevy of movies, among them the trans-Atlantic disaster epic Titanic and the fantastical sci-fi movie Avatar. In an exclusive interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Cameron specified the decision to globally screen the film to mark its 25th year. Avatar was also shown in 3D.
"Next year marks the 25th anniversary of Terminator 2 and that seemed like the perfect time to bring it back but this time in an all-new 3D version," Cameron said. "If you've never seen it, this'll be the version you want to see and remember."
The latest installment in the Terminator franchise, Terminator: Genisys, raked in $440.6 million at the box office worldwide after it was released earlier this year.
Marketing for the re-release will be specifically targeting China, where it seems many a Terminator fan lives — $110 million of Terminator: Genisys' box office gross came from the country alone.
