Destiny's New Level Boost Packs Come With A Huge Price Tag

Destiny players too busy (or lazy) to level up their characters now have an easy way to upgrade: by buying a level pack from the PlayStation Store that automatically levels characters up to 25.

Although Bungie previously denied that it would ever offer something like that, the microtransaction recently turned up on the European PlayStation Store with three level packs available: one for each guardian class.

Back in October, a group of gamers mined the game for data and turned up the paid boosts, but at the time, Bungie called it an experiment and denied it had any plans for making the level packs available to players.

However, now, it seems that Bungie either lied back in October or changed its mind. A group of Reddit users easily located level packs that turned up on the UK PlayStation Store that offer an instant level 25 boost for characters. The packs cost £24.99 (about $37) and come bundled with a few additional items, as well as a sublevel boost.

Many players will find this upsetting as they feel it's unfair for gamers to not put in the work of leveling up like everyone else, offering an easy way to jump to level 25 just for paying for the privilege. Judging from the comments on the initial Reddit thread, many Destiny players aren't happy about this turn of events.

"This is effectively the same as when people used to (and probably still do) charge for levelling characters in games like WoW," wrote Reddit user Will_GSRR. "It's not right and is a terrible practice, the fact that Bungie/Activision are happy to cash in on this is wrong."

Others are more upset about the fact that Bungie denied that it would add level packs several months ago, but are now going ahead and doing it.

"People datamined these months ago and called Bungie out," wrote Reddit user TheFirstCurse. "One of the arguments against this new DLC system was that Bungie would not stay true to their word and would start offering items which offered an advantage to those who paid. And, here we are, interest in Destiny is dying down, and Bungie is offering one of the exact items they claimed would never exist and this sub claimed would never exist."

Destiny released its newest expansion, "The Taken King," in September, which came with a single character boost. Destiny, which released in 2014, is available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
