Say goodbye to Dropbox's emailing app Mailbox: the service will be dropped (no pun intended) by its parent company, along with the photo app Carousel.
The reason? So the company can shift its attention to its primary sharing service.
"The Carousel and Mailbox teams have built products that are loved by many people and their work will continue to have an impact," said Dropbox founder and CEO Drew Houston and CTO Arash Ferdowsi in an official statement posted on the company's blog. "We'll be taking key features from Carousel back to the place where your photos live — in the Dropbox app. We'll also be using what we've learned from Mailbox to build new ways to communicate and collaborate on Dropbox."
Dropbox acquired Mailbox in 2013; despite the merger, Mailbox remained a standalone app, while Carousel, which was launched in 2014, was a company-designed app that never quite seemed to get off the ground.
For those worried about losing photo albums — or online commenting threads pertaining to those self-same albums — as well as their Mailbox messages, Dropbox has promised to provide tools to export them to their main service next year.
"We're committed to making the transitions from these products as painless as possible," the company promised.
Mailbox will shut down on Feb. 26, while Carousel will cease its operations on March 31.
"To our Carousel and Mailbox users, thank you for embracing these products — and we're sorry," said Dropbox. "It's not easy to say goodbye to products we all love. But ultimately, we think this increased focus will help us create even better experiences for you in the months and years to come."
