British manufacturer McLaren Automotive will showcase its upcoming P1 GTR supercar in the form of a design concept at the 64th Annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 17.
It has long been a tradition for Concours d'Elegance to hold some of the “firsts” in the automotive world, which is why McLaren is taking the opportunity to introduce its track-focused car edition that was considered a response to buyers’ requests.
"The McLaren P1 GTR is being designed and developed using five decades of race-winning knowledge from the pinnacle of motorsport. Participants in the programme will have unprecedented access to the technologies, resources and expertise which have helped develop and train Formula 1 champions. Program participants will have first-time access to resources, expertise and technologies that helped shaped and trained champions in Formula 1," the automaker said in a statement.
The design concept of the McLaren supercar will be uncovered in an exclusive preview on 18.00 EST August 15 at the McLaren Brand Centre on18th Fairway at Pebble Beach Lodge. It will later made its public debut at the Pebble Beach Concept Lawn during the weekend.
Complete specifications weren’t laid out yet, but research says the supercar will have racing slicks, better aerodynamics, widened track and a performance goal of 1,000 PS or 986 horsepower. Initial impression of industry watchers and car enthusiasts is that this P1 GTR appears to be more aggressive than the P1 flagship model.
McLaren’s P1 GTR will start production in June next year “when the 375th and final example of the road car has been completed - two decades on from the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans win by the legendary McLaren F1 GTR.” This supercar will make use of five decades of race-winning knowledge from the summit of motorsport.
The number of units to be released was not specified, but what’s clear is that only current P1 customers will have the chance to be placed on the list of buyers. Estimated price is around US$3.36 million or €1.98 million, of which includes a tailored comprehensive driving program, consultations with the automaker’s driver fitness group and access to the advanced racing simulators of McLaren, among others.
McLaren has been manufacturing luxury and high-performance sports cars after its 2010 global launch. Jay Leno was said to be the first customer in the U.S. to purchase the P1 sports car. The automaker has its McLaren Technology Center stationed in Woking, Surrey.
