iFixit Amazon Fire Phone teardown: Difficult to repair, 3/10 repairability score

The Amazon Fire Phone is the latest smartphone to hit the market, and it is so far causing a lot of buzz. This caused the guys at iFixit to give the device the teardown treatment, and from what we understand, it wasn't a walk in the park in every sense of the word.

From the reviews we've seen so far, the Amazon Fire Phone appears to be a decent device with easy to understand user interface. However, if something should go wrong with the handset, it might not be wise for a user to attempt pulling the phone apart.

The iFixit guys were not impressed with what Amazon has done with the Fire Phone. Apparently, the device is outfitted with wires coming from all places, along with other constraints that make it difficult for the team to pull the device apart, and fit it back together.

The team had a difficult time working with the projectors and infrared cameras found on the device. However, despite the difficulty, the iFixit team was very impressed with the 3D hardware. The Amazon Fire Phone uses 4 cameras to make the 3D features a possibility, and it is the first smartphone ever to do so.

Because of the above issues, the iFixit team gave the Amazon Fire Phone a reparability score of 3/10. That is quite terrible, though it doesn't mean one shouldn't purchase the Fire Phone, it only means that if the device should need repairing, owners should be prepared to pay quite a lot to get it fixed.

Specification wise, the Amazon Fire Phone is no slouch, but compared to the most talked about high-end smartphones of 2014 so far, it doesn't compare. The device comes with a quad core 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, a gyroscope, accelerometer, a barometer, dynamic perspective sensor, magnetometer and proximity sensor.

Furthermore, the device has a 4.7-inch 720p display, a 13-megapixel sharpshooter at the back, and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. After doing some advanced mathematics, we have concluded that the Amazon Fire Phone comes with six cameras; five at the front and one at the back.

When it comes down to storage, the device has a 32GB worth of internal storage, and 2GB of RAM.
