Fans of the novels of the English Regency novelist Jane Austen and George Romero-like flicks will now have something to bond over: the latest trailer of the Austen-inspired Pride and Prejudice and Zombies—and from the two-and-a-half minute vid alone, the horror-action-romance looks like it can sure pack a wallop (so zombies, watch your heads).
The movie stars Lily James, who first made her name in the latest cinematic retelling of the story of Cinderella, as the unsinkable Lizzie Bennet. In the adaptation of Jane Austen's famous novel, the Sony-produced movie (i.e., the 2009 novelistic adaptation and New York Times bestseller of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith) traces the origin of zombie-ism as one that "began with the Black Plague," as the trailer informs us. From there, we learn that the Bennet sisters aren't the ones many Pride and Prejudice fans are familiar with: namely, weapon-wielding Elizabeth and Co. "are trained for battle, not the kitchen," according to the family patriarch Mr. Bennet, played by Charles Dance.
The movie, like the book, will supposedly incorporate the same thematic elements of the marriage plotted-novel like classism and its satirical take on 18th century British society during the Regency period, all the while infusing the hallmarks that the zombie genre is now known for, like survivalism in a dystopian and/or post-apocalyptic world. And, of course, don't forget the gore: as both Austen and Grahame-Smith would say, "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains."
Here is a synopsis of the movie:
"A zombie outbreak has fallen upon the land in Jane Austen's classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England. Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) is a master of martial arts and weaponry and the handsome Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley) is a fierce zombie killer, yet the epitome of upper class prejudice. As the zombie outbreak intensifies, they must swallow their pride and join forces on the blood-soaked battlefield."
The movie will also feature Doctor Who's Matt Smith as Mr. Collins and Game of Thrones' Lena Headey as Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies will be released Feb. 6 in U.S. theaters.
