Thursday marks five years since Congress raised the federal minimum wage to $7.25 an hour. To shed light on this depressing anniversary, Funny or Die released a video of Kristen Bell playing an irritated, minimum wage-earning Mary Poppins. Bell pulls of an amazing perfomance, with great vocals and a spot-on impression of a broke governess.
In the hilarious skit, Bell quits her job as a governess because she is severely underpaid. The song is set to the tune of the original Mary Poppins song, "A Spoonful of Sugar." And the parody features the chorus, "just a three dollar increase can make a living wage."
In the video, Bell explains how after taxes and social security, "the pay is too low" and she "can't live off this dough." And in can get pretty rough for Mary Poppins, because as she points out in the video, those birds are not cheap.
