The return of the "Ghostbusters" may finally be gaining some traction with star Dan Aykroyd speaking again about the possibility of a new installment in the beloved series. Rumors have been swirling for years that the popular series will finally add a third chapter. Still, this new report may have to be taken with a grain of salt, especially after all of the false starts over the years.
Dan Aykroyd sounds like he will never give up on the project despite losing the legendary Harold Ramis earlier this year. "Ghostbusters" has already been in the news this year with the 30th anniversary of the franchise and the original movie returning to the big screen for a week around Labor Day.
"It looks like we'll be in production, pre-production in the spring now, from what I'm hearing," Ayrkoyd said. "It should be good," says Aykroyd after talking with SlashFilm.
Just who will be filling out the cast and which actors will be sporting the Ghostbusters jumpsuit is unclear. Rumors have been around for a while that stars Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill have interest in the property, but nothing can be confirmed.
Aykroyd has been the driving force behind the "Ghostbusters" franchise for many years, and he has served as the mouthpiece for the rest of the team that was behind the first two films. It is clear, though, that superstar and leader of the Ghostbusters, Bill Murray, will not be participating in the third installment. Murray, who was the defacto leader of the Ghostbusters, has publicly made it clear that he is not interested, despite dressing up as Peter Venkman a few years ago at a high profile awards show. Privately it seems that Murray wants no part of the third installment, but when stunts like that happen, it makes fans think that there is still a chance for the actor to return to the film.
Unfortunately, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have already balked at the new directing job, and nothing has come of the rumors of Ruben Fleischer ("Zombieland") taking the helm of "Ghostbusters 3."
You have to hand it to Aykroyd who continues to champion the "Ghostbusters" franchise. There have been many false starts over the past 25 years, but this time does sound different. If the production can land original director Ivan Reitman in a producing role, the sequel may have a real shot.
