New Apple MacBook Pro gets boost under the hood: What you should know

Apple has refreshed its 15-inch MacBook Pro which boasts of Retina display, will pack in the much rumored Intel Haswell processor, faster graphics and a longer battery life.

The technology giant took the wraps off the MaBook Pro with Retina display at its press event in San Francisco on Tuesday, October 22. The 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros now house Intel's Crystalwell graphics and 802.11ac Wi-fi.

"We've made the world's best pro notebook even better by adding more performance and even longer battery life," said Philip Schiller, Apple's SVP of Worldwide Marketing. "MacBook Pro with Retina display continues to redefine the pro notebook."

The 13-inc MacBook Pro with Retina display is just 0.71 inches thin. It houses a fourth-gen dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, which is clocked at 2.6GHz with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.1GHz. Apple claims that the Intel Iris graphics give up to 90 percent faster performance than the previous-gen MacBook Pro with Retina display. Consumers also have the option to configure the device to a faster dual-core Intel Core i7 processor clocked at 2.8GHz (with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.3GHz).

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro supports up to 9 hours of battery life, which is 2 hours more than that of the previous generation.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display houses a fourth-gen quad-core Intel Core i7 (Haswell) processor that is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.5 GHz). The notebook also packs in Intel Iris Pro graphics "for unprecedented levels of integrated graphics performance." Consumers also have the option of configuring the device with a faster quad-core Intel Core i7 processor clocked at 2.6 GHz (Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.8 GHz).

The notebook offers support for up to 8 hours of battery life, which is an hour more than the previous iteration.

Both the refreshed notebooks also come pre-loaded with the latest OS X - Mavericks - and feature the faster PCIe flash storage with up to "60 percent faster read speeds" than previous generations.

The MacBook Pros with Retina display are now available for purchase via the Apple Store online. The 13-inch 128GB, 256GB and 512GB variants will cost $1,299, $1,499, and $1,799 respectively. The 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display 256GB and 512GB variants will cost $1,999 and $2,599, respectively.
