'Disney Infinity 2.0' adds all five Guardians of the Galaxy and themed playset

Just in time for San Diego Comic-Con 2014, Avalanche Software has announced the third (and final?) superhero-themed playset and figures available for Disney Infinity 2.0.

For the unaware, Disney Infinity is the Skylander-esque "collectible figurines come to life" gaming platform created around Disney's vast catalog of characters and stories. It consists of figures and "Playsets" that are entire video games in their own right, themed around a Disney setting or storyline. The first edition released last year and enjoyed huge sales.

The second game was announced this year, introducing Marvel superheroes to the mix. The first playset announced was for the Avengers, including all six heroes seen in "The Avengers" movie. Not long after, a Spider-Man Playset was announced that features the wall-crawler, Nick Fury, Nova, Iron Fist and Venom.

Now Disney Infinity 2.0 has announced a third superhero playset. As expected, this one is themed around the Guardians of the Galaxy. The playset includes a storyline similar to that of the movie, as well as heroes Star-Lord and Gamora. Available to purchase separately will be Drax the Destroyer, Groot and Rocket Raccoon. Six Guardians-themed Power Discs will also be available.

Star-Lord shoots with his two pistols, he has a super jump ability and he can melee like other characters. Drax is a brutal melee fighter with twin daggers. He can use his daggers to crawl on walls, and he likes to get right up in his enemies' faces when fighting. Gamora plays much like Black Widow, a lithe, deadly melee attacker who carries two swords. Rocket mows down foes with his dual giant guns. Groot can stretch his tree-like limbs to attack, and even put his arms into the ground only to have them sprout out again somewhere else, bigger and stronger.

Sony, who's been scoring loads of exclusive content from many titles lately, has arranged two special bundles that will be available only for PlayStation gamers. The Collector's Edition includes everything in the standard Starter Pack, including the game disc and three Avengers characters, but it adds the remaining three Avengers and a huge diorama display for all six. The diorama has a giant Frost Beast boss, as seen in the Avengers Playset, and it even lights up. This one will be available in PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 limited editions, and offers another perk: access to the Hulk character 30 days before he goes on sale individually. The Collector's Edition is priced at $179.99.

A PlayStation Hardware Bundle will also be available that includes the Starter Pack and a special edition PlayStation 3 with a 12GB hard drive. It's priced at $249.99. Curiously, there will be no similar PS4 bundle.

Both bundles can be pre-ordered this week at Comic-Con, at either the Marvel booth or the special Disney Infinity Pop-Up Shop, located at 343 4th Ave. in San Diego.

No release date has been set for the Guardians of the Galaxy Playset or figures. The Disney Infinity 2.0 Starter Pack and some of the first playable figures go on sale September 23, 2014.
