The BBC’s iPlayer and news website encountered technical glitches for over 24 hours during the weekend, preventing its global users to watch their online BBC favorite shows and other online services.
The technical problem occurred Saturday morning and went on till Sunday.
"Due to technical problems, we are displaying a simplified version of the BBC Homepage. We are working to restore normal service," said the error message posted on BBC’s homepage.
iPlayer users took to Twitter their complaints over the technical issues at BBC. It wasn’t clear how many users of the British website were affected by the said issue.
"[M]y mum doesnt pay her tv license for me to be unable to use iplayer @BBCiPlayer [sic]," said user @carlyslaejepsen.
"iPlayer having problems? Rebooted tablet twice with no improvement: can't load data," a user identified as J-P Stacey also tweeted.
The said glitch prevented users to view pages and programs such as World Cup 2014, SpringWatch, Formula One’s competition highlights, Archers Omnibus and The Open golf tournament over the weekend.
Meanwhile BBC started sending its apologies to its users through its official Twitter account on July 20.
"We're sorry @BBCiPlayer & @bbccouk are not working for all users. We are working hard to fix the problem. Please bear with us," tweeted the BBC in response to the online rage.
BBC’s press office also issued a statement expressing its awareness of the problem that hampered several people to access some parts of the BBC online.
"We are working hard to fix this as soon as possible," a BBC spokeswoman said.
By Sunday afternoon, the BBC’s news website was seen back to normal operations.
The BBC rolled out its iPlayer app on PC on Christmas day in 2007. At present, it is now available in over a thousand of devices worldwide. It is considered the topmost brand in UK.
The company rolled out several updates on its iPlayer app sometime in May this year, initially for users of Windows Phone 8. Later, the app updates were made available to Android on Google Play Store and iOS on the Apple App Store as well.
Updates included new Home screen, Category and Channel pages, subtitles to programs downloaded and optimized design for seamless switching from landscape to portrait orientations and vice versa.
The BBC’s iPlayer app provides users a selection of the widely popular BBC shows, enhanced Channel and Category pages and an array of curated content.
