There's a reason why so many people are excited for Just Cause 3, and it's not necessarily the near-constant explosions, or the gorgeous graphics, or the improved grappling hook (though these things are totally worth getting excited about). No, people are excited for Just Cause 3 because it's a game that seemingly refuses to take itself seriously.
Case in point: every single one of the game's cinematic teasers plays out more like an explosion-filled montage than actual trailers. Most games use their teasers and trailers as a way to build up the story, to start building dramatic tension before the game is even released. Just Cause 3, on the other hand, has yet to do that with a single one of its trailers. Instead, the developers have focused on what everyone wants to see: vehicular mayhem, insane stunts and giant explosions.
Even now, with the game's "Kasabian Trailer," the Just Cause team isn't interested in trying to lay out the game's story in under a minute: it's more of a brief glimpse of what the game will actually be like. It doesn't try to force some huge conflict for emotional weight, or hint at an entirely unnecessary love story: it's just explosions, explosions, and more explosions:
To be honest, it's a little strange that the trailer starts off with CG—given the fact that everything in those opening moments is possible within the game itself, you'd be forgiven for wondering why the first half of the trailer isn't straight gameplay.
Even so, the trailer's still awesome: it's nothing new or particularly groundbreaking, but it's yet another reminder of why Just Cause 3 looks so good. It ditches the drama and melancholy that plagues modern gaming and embraces its goofy, over-the-top nature—and it's something that gaming as a whole could use more of.
Oh, and if you needed any proof of just how good the game looks, Avalanche Studios uploaded a clip of the game running in 4K. If you thought the destruction in Just Cause 3 looked amazing before, just wait until you see it in ultrahigh-def:
Thankfully, the wait is almost over: Just Cause 3 is set to launch on Dec. 1.
