Although trailers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens have only teased just a little of Harrison Ford's return to the franchise as Han Solo, a new TV spot finally shows the character in action.
In this new footage, Han partners up with Finn (John Boyega) to take on some bad guys. Han asks Finn "Are you sure you're up for this." Finn answers with a definite, "no." However, for those familiar with Ford's character, it's likely that Finn is in good hands.
The spot also reveals a little more background information on Finn, who was once a storm trooper. "You don't know a thing about me: what I've seen," he admits in the trailer. This serves as a message to potential film viewers, too, because they know little about the character: most of Finn's backstory in the movie remains a mystery.
Finn also fights with a familiar-looking lightsaber during this new trailer: the one that once belonged to Luke Skywalker. There is another parallel with Skywalker, too: Finn also mans the turrets on the Millennium Falcon.
For fans of the Star Wars franchise, there's good news: expect a never-ending round of films telling stories throughout the Star Wars universe.
"Star Wars is its own genre," said Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi writer Lawrence Kasdan (he also assisted on The Force Awakens) to Wired. "Like all genres, it can hold a million different kinds of artists and stories. They say 'Buddha is what you do to it.' And that's Star Wars. It can be anything you want it to be."
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the first film in the franchise without the involvement of George Lucas, who brought the original trilogy to life that created the familiar universe and then followed that with a prequel trilogy. There's a reason for that, though.
"You go to make a movie and all you do is get criticized, and people try to make decisions about what you're going to do before you do it," said Lucas to Vanity Fair. "And it's not much fun. You can't experiment. You have to do it a certain way. I don't like that, I never did. I started out in experimental films and I want to go back to experimental films."
In that same interview, Lucas also took a dig at his critics by stating that his favorite character is Jar Jar Binks, which is often cited as the least favorite among critics and fans.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens on December 18.
