Seiko Re-Issues Watch Worn By Ripley In 'Alien'

For Alien fans looking to get their hands on a piece of movie history, Seiko has good news just for you: the company plans on re-issuing the same watch worn by Ripley (as portrayed by actress Sigourney Weaver) in the film.

Although the watch wasn't specifically designed for the movie, Alien fans took note of it immediately. The timepiece, originally sold in the 1980s, is the Giugiaro 7A28-7000, and it got its design thanks to Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Now, Seiko plans on bringing that watch back, although in limited numbers: if you want it, you better act fast. This time, Seiko calls it the Seiko X Giugiaro Spirit Smart. Although its original design hails from the 1980s, it still has a futuristic look to it. The only difference between the original and the re-issue is that the new version is missing a button and crown on the left side.

The Seiko X Giugiaro Spirit Smart comes in two colors: gray (like Ripley's) and black and runs around 32,000 (around $260) to 36,000 yen (around $290). That still seems like an expensive watch, but considering that the original sells for thousands of dollars on eBay, these prices make the re-issue a steal.

Of course, diehard fans may want the original 1980s version, but at least now, there's an alternative that's a little less expensive. It's also a good buy for Ripley cosplayers looking to add that final touch to their costumes.

Blog To Watch got its hands on a copy of the new watch and wrote a hands-on article about it.

"Someday, I would love to own the original Seiko 7A28-7000 watch as a collector's item, but it would be hard, as my inclination would be to wear it," wrote Ariel Adams on the site. "With that said, these two new limited edition Seiko X Giugiaro Spirit Smart re-issues will make better daily-wear timepieces, as the originals are worth in the thousands right now (if not more) — and with not-crazy prices, these new models will be better for daily wear. "

Sony only plans on producing around 6,000 of the watches total (3,000 in each color), so those interested in buying it need to do so quickly. Unfortunately, so far, the watch is only available in Japan.
