Neill Blomkamp's 'Alien' Movie Officially Takes A Backseat For Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' Sequel

After months of rumors and speculation regarding what exactly was holding up production on Neill Blomkamp's take on the Alien franchise, we know have a definitive answer: Ridley Scott.

Specifically, Ridley Scott's Prometheus sequel, which was recently revealed to be called Alien: Paradise Lost. It has long been rumored that Scott has insisted his film take precedence over Blomkamp's, and that now seems to be confirmed thanks to Blomkamp's recent remarks on Twitter.

Alien: Paradise Lost is expected sometime in 2017, with shooting on the film slated to begin early next year. Bloody Disgusting previously reported that 20th Century Fox was excited to get both Scott's sequel and Blomkamp's vision in theaters before 2020, with the as of yet untitled Alien 5 slated to release sometime in 2018. It's unclear now if that will still be happening or not.

Scott recently discussed in an interview how Prometheus may get multiple sequels, rather than just one, and how it will directly connect with Alien.

"It will be in the one after this one or maybe even a fourth film before we get back into the Alien franchise ...

"The whole point of it is to explain the Alien franchise and to explain the how and why of the creation of the Alien itself," he said. "I always thought of the Alien as kind of a piece of bacterial warfare. I always thought that that original ship, which I call the Croissant, was a battleship, holding these biomechanoid creatures that were all about destruction."

That makes the entire name behind Prometheus 2 (officially titled Alien: Paradise Lost) a little confusing, since Scott says the film won't directly connect to Alien in the first place, with that job going to potential future sequels in the franchise.

All we know is this: we want to see these awesome Pulse Rifles in action sooner rather than later.
