The past few days have seen a lot of discussion regarding the Justice League Dark film, which isn't even scheduled to go into production until sometime next year. However, rumors about which actors being approached for roles in the film now run rampant.
The latest rumor is that DC recently considered actor Ben Mendelsohn for the role of Anton Arcane in the film, a villain known to the DC Comics universe. Most DC fans know Mendelsohn as the actor who played Daggett in The Dark Knight Rises. However, the actor will also appear in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which releases next year.
In the comics, Arcane is the arch nemesis of Swamp Thing. He is a mad scientist with an obsession with immortality, and as a result, he creates monstrous creatures in his lab, some involving the dead. In the comics, Arcane even resurrects his dead brother, and often uses magic in his unethical experiments.
However, Mendelsohn isn't the only actor being considered for the film. Previous rumors from earlier this week have DC approaching Ron Perlman about playing Swamp Thing, which thrilled comic book fans who feel that he's perfect for the role.
Although we lost the Constantine TV series, the character of John Constantine will appear again in Justice League Dark. Unfortunately, Matt Ryan won't portray him, as DC likes to keep its TV and movie property universes separate. However, that role may go to Colin Farrell, who seems a lot like the character in real life, sans the magic.
Other actors being consideration for the film include Ewan McGregor as Jason Blood — a man who has a demon bound to him, and Monica Belluci as Madame Xanadu — a modern day equivalent of Nimue, a sorceress associated with Arthurian legend.
However, no one has mentioned the casting for Zatanna, magician and sometime romantic partner to John Constantine. Reports state that producers plan on casting a black or Latina actress in the role.
The Justice League Dark comic book series premiered in 2011 and focused on a group of not-so-super heroes who handled the darker and more supernatural things that the Justice League could not. The original team featured John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade, the Changing Man and Zatanna. However, others eventually joined the team, including Swamp Thing, Timothy Hunter and Black Orchid.
Although Justice League Dark is set to begin production in 2016, DC has not yet given a release date for the film.
