Japanese watchmaker Seiko is re-issuing the Giugiaro 7A28-7000 watch, which gained a lot of popularity after it appeared on Sigourney Weaver's wrist in the movie "Alien." The re-issue of the watch is called the Seiko X Giugiaro Design.
Giorgetto Giugiaro, an Italian car designer, conceived the watch for Seiko in the early 1980s. The watch features futuristic chronograph buttons on the right. The Giugiaro 7A28-7000 is also the first watch to use an analog quartz chronograph movement.
The original Seiko Giugiaro 7A28-7000 was released in 1983 and many movie watch lovers wanted to own one after Ellen Ripley, the role played by Sigourney Weaver in "Alien," wore the watch in the Hollywood film.
The original version of the watch also appears on eBay but most of them are not in the ideal condition as needed by collectors. The new Seiko X Giugiaro Design will be available in limited edition, which brings an opportunity to many watch lovers and movie lovers to own one.
The watch will be available in gray and black colors. The new version will have identical design aspects in comparison to the original watch but the re-issue will have some difference when compared to its predecessor.
The gray version of the stainless steel watch will not have the notable extra buttons and the crown. The new version of the watch will also be slightly sleeker. Many collectors who are looking for the same watch that Weaver wore in "Alien" may not be happy with the slight changes but the attractive price tag may still attract many customers.
According to the Seiko website, the grey version of the watch (SCED035) will be priced at 32,000 Yen, or about $260, plus taxes. Customers who want to buy the black iteration of the Seiko watch (SCED037) will have to splash an extra 4,000 Yen or about $32. The SCED037 will cost 36,000 Yen, or just over $291, plus taxes.
