Lowe's Announces Next-Generation Iris Smart Home Hub With Mobile-First Update

Lowe's announced on Monday the next-generation version of its Iris smart home hub with updated features, along with an emphasis on the mobile experience.

Lowe's previously launched Iris in 2012, which required users to set it up on their desktops.

Iris now features a sleeker and smaller design and includes a faster processor for enhanced performance, more storage thanks to the use of Microsoft's Azure cloud technology and Bluetooth connectivity, along with compatibility with ZigBee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi and AllJoyn-enabled devices.

Built from the ground up, Lowe's also redesigned its app that was previously available for its system to now allow users to control their system from their mobile devices without having to rely on the desktop version.

"This year's Iris by Lowe's Smart Home Survey revealed that more than half (57 percent) of Americans prefer DIY smart home solutions, and home improvement stores are the No. 1 place they are turning to for purchase," Mick Koster, VP and general manager of Iris Home Systems, said in a press release. "As consumers increasingly become interested in home automation, Iris will continue evolving to meet the needs of each customer's lifestyle. This next generation of Iris delivers on the promise of the smart home today — in a way that is immediately and easily accessible and affordable for consumers across America."

Available for iOS and Android, the app has a modern look with animations, as well as a customizable interface that allows users to upload photos of their family, home and connected devices to make a more personalized experience that mirrors the user's home. Users can control their devices by tapping within the app.

The app will be updated every few weeks and will add more third-party devices over time.

The second generation Iris hub is cheaper than the previous system, now costing consumers only $59.99, compared with $99.99. Lowe's will still charge $9.99 a month for its premium service, which provides two-week history and other advanced features, although users can still control their smart devices remotely, stream video and receive notifications for free.

Lowe's also redesigned seven of the Smart Hub's devices, including the Contact Sensor that retails for $22.99, the Smart Plug for $34.99, Motion Sensor for $29.99, Help Pendant for $29.99, Smart Button for $24.99, Smart Fob for $24.99 and Smart Keypad for $39.99.

These devices can be purchased separately or as part of the Security Pack that will allow users to track movement, open windows and doors and includes an audible siren for $99, or the Home Automation Pack that includes a motion detection sensor, the Smart Plug and Smart Button for $129.
