Marvel has had a big week of changes that concern the future of the flagship characters from the House of Ideas. The big three, aka Iron Man, Captain America and Thor, all will have major changes that will alter the face of the Marvel Universe in the coming months. As we reported earlier in the week, the new Thor is going to be a female and there will be a new Captain America wearing the flag.
Now, it looks like Iron Man is going to get a new facelift. Marvel Editor in Chief Axel Alonso recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly to discuss some of the details of the pivotal events coming to the comics.
"The Genius Bar costume is there for a reason," Alonso said. "The newly-transformed Superior Iron Man has very ambitious plans for the city that some of its residents embrace, but not all. Like the Superior Spider-Man, Superior Iron Man is a character that's hard to root for."
All of these events are set up to tie in seamlessly with next year's mega production "Avengers: Age of Ultron." Apparently the publisher's new Avengers NOW! label will go beyond the core triumvirate. It is going to effect all of the characters, or at least all of the characters that are being made into a movie. Marvel will also be shifting the focus to second tier characters, such as the Scarlet Witch and The Inhumans. This looks to be a good old fashioned shake up for the legendary publisher, and while not everything has been revealed, this new direction will look to build upon their fan base and hopefully create new readers the world over.
It was revealed earlier that the new Captain America is going to be Steve Rogers' long time ally Sam Wilson also known as Falcon. Wilson was portrayed by actor Anthony Mackie in this year's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." As far as the new Lady Thor, those events will spin out of the "Orignal Sin" arc that is currently in play.
"There was a time about two and a half years ago, when we were canceling X-23, and I realized that was the last of our female-helmed titles," notes Alonso.
In addition to these big changes to the Marvel U, the Avengers NOW! initiative is going to feature fan favorites like Deathlok and the Winter Soldier and over 10 titles that are in the planning phase.
