MediaTek takes aim at Qualcomm with new chipset

Taiwan-based chipmaker MediaTek is now offering its latest mobile processing chipset for high-end mobile devices. The company is a semiconductor maker for wireless communications and connectivity needs.

MediaTek competes head-on with the dominant Qualcomm mobile processing products. Think of it as the AMD to Intel's dominance of the PC and laptop market.

The new MT6795 is aimed at mobile devices that are powered by the 64-bit Android operating systems.

From a specifications standpoint, the MT6795 is designed to be the first 64-bit, LTE, True Octa-core SoC (system on a chip) for the premium phone and tablet market. Clock speed is rated as up to 2.2 GHz.

The new processor features MediaTek's CorePilot (CorePilot maximizes the output and work flow of all eight chip cores) technology that combines top-level multiprocessor performance with thermal control. It also incorporates dual channel LPDDR3 RAM at 933 MHz for maximum memory bandwidth. There is also support for Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth, FM, GPS and Glonass.

The MT6795 also provides outstanding video and multimedia performance, supporting many technologies that are new to smartphones. Support for 120-Hz displays with Response Time Enhancement Technology and MediaTek ClearMotion enhances the capability to create and output 380 frames per second (fps) 1080p Full HD super-slow motion videos. The 2K on-device display depicts up to 2560 x 1600 pixels.

The MT6795 will also support multimode wireless charging with MediaTek's multimode wireless power receiver IC.

The MT6795 will also move the ball down the field in supporting the newest LTE standards and help device makers anxious to progress into the 64-bit Android market. The new chip takes its place at the top of MediaTek's chip portfolio, completing the troika -- together with the MT6752 for mainstream users and the MT6732 for entry-level models. All three models include support for 4G LTE and parallel computing capability from CorePilot and 64-bit processors.

"MediaTek has once again demonstrated leading engineering capabilities by delivering breakthrough technology and time-to-market advantage that enable limitless opportunities for our partners and end users, while setting the bar even higher for our competition," said Jeffrey Ju, general manager of the MediaTek smartphone business unit. "With a complete and inclusive 64-bit LTE SoC product portfolio, we are firmly on track to lead the industry in delivering premium mobile user experiences for years to come."

The chip is available now and is expected to be featured in devices that will be available by the end of this year.
