The roster for the new Super Smash Bros. seems to grow in size every week, with three characters joining the battle in an announcement trailer today.
Two of the three -- Lucina and Robin -- are from Nintendo's turned-based strategy franchise Fire Emblem, more specifically from the latest game in the series: Fire Emblem: Awakening. Lucina, who appears in Awakening, will wield her signature falchion sword and looks to be in the same vein of previously announced and returning Fire Emblem characters Ike and Marth.
More surprising is the inclusion of Robin, also known as the player character in Awakening. Robin can be either male or female depending on your preference just like in Awakening and uses a sword and a limited number of spells to inflict damage.
Rounding out the announcement is finally the confirmation that Captain Falcon will be returning to duke it out once again, no doubt putting the minds of many worried Smash fans to rest . Falcon represents Nintendo's F-Zero racing franchise and has been in every Super Smash Bros. game to date, starting with the original on the Nintendo 64 in 1999.
The three fighters can be seen battling it out in the three-minute trailer below as Lucina defends her wounded father, Chrom, from Captain Falcon. Just as the Captain is about to unleash his powerful "Falcon Punch" signature move, Robin hurls a spell and joins the fray on the side of Lucina before proceeding to show off a variety of their special abilities.
Chrom makes a brief in-game appearance at the end of the trailer, initially leading many believe that Chrom too would be joining the roster and bringing the number of Fire Emblem characters in the game up to a whopping five. Upon closer inspection that doesn't seem to be the case. Chrom instead looks to make an appearance in Lucina's final smash attack or may be a one-time use assist trophy, rather than a fully playable character.
That brings the total number of playable fighters in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS to 36, with a few old favorites like Mr. Game & Watch and the Ice Climbers yet to make an appearance. Expect more reveals in the coming months leading up to the launch of the 3DS version of the game in October, which will include all characters seen in the Wii U version of the game. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is currently scheduled to release sometime during the holidays.
