Originally scheduled for a Feb. 9 release, the fight for the last star in the universe has been pushed a tab bit further into the future. Developer Gearbox will take more time to polish Battleborn and now plans to release the sci-fi shooter on May 3.
Battleborn borrows elements from the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena genre, but it is a shooter at its core. The game is in development for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Presumably, Gearbox needs a bit more time to squash bugs and find the perfect balance. The news comes as Battleborn undergoes closed technical tests, and shortly after Gearbox unleashed a trailer for the game's competitive multiplayer.
There's a heavy focus on teamwork in Battleborn, as Gearbox reaches for eSports gold with the game. As the different alien factions fight for control over the last star in the universe, odd alliances are formed as the sides duke it out the arena.
Each of the game's characters are meant to compliment others, so communication and collaboration are key in this game. So it's understandable that Gearbox wants to get this one right. As witnessed by the asymmetrical Battlefield games, balance is key to eSports legitimacy and adoption.
So that was the downer in a second quarter earnings report stuffed with boasts and pretty numbers from publisher Take-Two Interactive. For yet another quarter, the publisher is raising its forecast for its 2016 fiscal year in order to reflect its higher-than-expected performance, according to Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two.
"With our robust development pipeline and increasing contribution from recurrent consumer spending, Take-Two is better positioned than ever to generate revenue growth and margin expansion in future years, and returns for our shareholders over the long-term," said Zelnick.
Elsewhere, Take-Two reported that XCOM 2 is still on course for its Feb. 5 release. The turn-based strategy game was originally slated for release this month. On the other hand, the release window of Mafia III's has been narrowed, but the game is still expected to launch at some point next year.
