Steven Spielberg and Colin Trevorrow Designed Jurassic World As A Trilogy

Sci-fi adventure film "Jurassic World" made over $160 billion at the box office, making it not only the highest-grossing film of 2015, but also the highest-grossing film of all time.

No big deal, really.

The fourth installment in the series was set 22 years after the events of 1993's "Jurassic Park" on Isla Nubar, featuring a relatively new dinosaur theme park. It was co-written and directed by Colin Trevorrow and co-produced by Patrick Crowley and Frank Marshall. Universal Pictures distributed the movie, while production companies were Thomas Tull's Legendary Pictures and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment.

As if numbers alone weren't enough to prove how much people love their dinosaurs, Universal announced that the sequel would be released on June 22, 2018 – still, that wasn't enough.

In a roundtable event, Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley shared that "Jurassic Park" was designed by Trevorrow and Spielberg as a trilogy. Don't worry, this information isn't just new to you, apparently, it also came as a surprise for the studio execs.

"There's no reason why we should [have trouble]. [Director] Colin Trevorrow is busy working on an outline. He's been working with Steven [Spielberg]. And they have an idea for the next two movies actually. It was designed as a trilogy, unbeknown to us. It's a happy surprise," Langley said.

Trevorrow, however, will not return for the sequel as he will be directing "Star Wars Episode IX," slated for 2019. Rest assured, he will still be involved as co-writer and executive producer.

"It will get to be a different kind of film," said Trevorrow about the sequel. "The audience has given us permission to a certain extent to take this to the next level."

The 39-year-old director and screenwriter went on to share that the movies will be more than just about dinosaurs, but instead, will zoom out into the bigger picture regarding man's relationship with animals.

He also added that the general audience, as well as the production, were ready to explore new directions for the trilogy.
