Microsoft and Bethesda are teaming up to give away Fallout 3 for free to anyone who preorders Fallout 4 for Xbox One. The game will be offered via the console's backward compatibility feature that allows users to play Xbox 360 games on their Xbox One.
Microsoft first made this announcement back at E3 2015, but this is the first time the company has decided to shed more light on the matter. It turns out that it doesn't matter which version of the game a person preorders, they will still get Fallout 3 as part of the package.
Having both games on the Xbox One should make it a lot easier for players to compare the two where graphics, gameplay and story are concerned, among other improvements. One particular improvement players might find interesting is the new Vault-TEC Assisted Targeting System, or VATS for short.
It's a unique mechanic that allows for detailed calculations during battle. The system basically stops time to show the player several statistics about an enemy. However, in Fallout 4, the system does not stop time, but rather slows it down. The system can show weak points, as well as the amount of damage players must deliver to take down the enemy.
The big difference with the new VATS is its need to recharge after use. This should make for a more demanding game. It should also force players to use only VATS on more challenging creatures of the wasteland.
Fallout 4 is one of the most anticipated video games of the year so far, similar to how Fallout 3 was one of the most anticipated before it was released.
Fallout 4 will launch on the Xbox One, along with the PlayStation 4 and the PC come Nov. 10. Mods will be available for the Xbox One and PC versions of the game, but PlayStation 4 players will have to wait a little while before taking advantage of this interesting feature that was once exclusive to the PC.
